In this pitching mechanics video I demonstrate the proper way to do the slide step. The slide step is used to keep base runners from getting a good jump on the pitcher, there is a right and a wrong way to do this as a pitcher. I will demonstrate what I and all of my other pitchers like to do.

Using the slide step the wrong way can keep a pitcher from throwing the ball faster.  Most pitchers try not to lift their leg at all in the attempt to hold the runner close to the bag.  The problem with this method is that it makes it near impossible for them to lead with their hips.  Pitchers who lead with their hip can not only throw faster, but they are more likely to last longer on the mound.
