Great Pitchers Don’t Waste Pitches!

Have you or any pitcher on your team had and 0-2 count on a batter and ended up walking him?

How does this happen? Over confidence maybe? A sign of relief for some pitchers being that are far ahead in the count that they think “hey I got this guy, no biggie?”

The fact of the matter is, pitchers are taught to “waste pitches”.

They get a head in the count and they try that new pitch they haven’t practiced much in the bullpen. Then its 1-2. Still ahead in the count you try another pitch. You try to get him to swing at but it’s far off the plate. No chance of him swinging at all (great idea though because you don’t want to just serve him up on 0-2 either)

But there’s one problem [Read more...]

Just Throw Strikes Kid?

Have one of your coaches ever told you to “just throw strikes” and get us out of this inning? Many coaches out there make the mistake of telling pitchers to “just throw strikes”.

Of course your pitchers are trying to throw strikes to end the inning; what they really can’t do is control their emotions or they lack correct mechanics. When a coach tells pitchers to “just throw strikes” what the coach is really implying is they don’t know what else to tell the struggling pitcher. They lack the education behind what is really going on in the pitchers mind in different game scenarios; or they lack the knowledge about mechanics. [Read more...]

Are You a Strikeout Pitcher?

Pitchers that pitch for strikeouts need to beware!

I know of a  AAA pitcher who retired from the Orioles organization a few years ago.

This pitcher threw high 90′s and considered himself a “strikeout pitcher”.

After his retirement a couple years ago, he told this coach that he wished he would have been a “smarter pitcher“.

He wished he wouldn’t have tried to strike everyone out all the time.

He feels he could have played at a higher level if he would’ve hit his spots better and have been more selective with his pitches.

I couldn’t agree with him more!

Strikeouts are great, don’t get me wrong.

Coaching Pitchers Off Speed Pitches

Attention Coaches! Do your pitchers really know how to throw good off-speed pitches? Pitches that have incredible movement? Pitches that win ball games?

We all know that the best of teams can be beat if you have a handful of pitchers on your team that can throw a great breaking ball or changeup.

Look at Greg Maddux for example, he wasn’t overpowering at all. When most pitchers get in a bind they just try and throw the ball by the batter; not Greg Maddux. He knew what his job was. His job was to keep the hitters off balance, so when he would get in a bind he would locate better and change speeds. Heck, I think his fastball at the major league level looked like a changeup to most hitters. Think about that!

What I wanted to write about today has everything to do with teaching your pitchers how to throw off-speed pitches correctly.

As I mentioned last week, Baseball is taught by people with the greatest intentions, but those same people teach their pitchers techniques and strategies that are not only ineffective, but can cause some serious damage to their throwing arms. [Read more...]

Pitchers: Stay ahead Of the Count!

A few weeks ago I was watching a Baseball documentary and the reporters were interviewing pitchers in a double A program who used to play in the Major Leagues.

They asked three of them what they have learned most from the experience and what they feel they need to do to get back to the MLB.

The answer all of them gave was get ahead of the count and stay there.

This is no new news, but here are a few pointers that will help you accomplish that.

1) Throw first pitch strikes : We talked about this about a month ago.  We also talked about mixing your first pitch pitches [Read more...]

Baseball Pitching: Sore Arm?

Every year I receive a handful of calls from concerned parents about their sons sore arm.  The majority of the time they ask what could have happened to cause this and what they can avoid in the future to insure this doesn’t happen again.

There are many reasons why pitchers get sore arms, but the majority of the time it has to do with one of the following:

poor mechanics, overuse, lack of proper warm up and cool down, not being fit to pitch and lack of knowledge of how to take care of your arm.

I know we discuss proper mechanics a lot because they are so important to your success on the mound.

However, today I want to talk about overuse.

Now, before I get any further I want you to know that I’m not one of those who discourages pitchers to throw!

Some pitchers have great genetics and [Read more...]

Pitching Pick off Moves and Overthrows

We all know the worst thing a pitcher can do on a pick off attempt is overthrow the ball and give the runner a free base.

What can pitchers do then to ensure they don’t overthrow the ball?

Here are ten pitching tips that will keep you from giving runners a free base.

1) Keep your moves smooth and simple to the bag. Remember, you aren’t always trying to pick off the runner; you are just trying to keep them close to the bag. [Read more...]
