The athletes who come see me the most for mechanics training come once a week for an hour. That means I get to influence their game for just four hours per month. That’s nothing compared to the time you get to think, talk, watch, and work baseball with your athlete.
So why haven’t you been spending the time working with son/daughter on skill training? The main reason I hear from parents is that they simply don’t know how to see the mechanics problems let alone go about fixing them. I know how you feel. My ten year old son has played soccer for half his life or more. Even though I played soccer up through high school, I can’t coach him on many specifics of the game because it’s been so long, and I just don’t know if I’d be doing him any good or not.
I do listen at games, camps, and practices to what the coaches are saying so I can help accelerate his game at home. Just like you, I want to help my son succeed in whatever sport he chooses.
So make the choice this fall to really dig in to pitching or hitting mechanics and get involved in the training of your son/daughter. Not only will it help mechanics development, but it’s healthy time spent with your kid.
