College Baseball Recruiting: Writing a Letter

Are you in the process of trying to figure out which school is right for you?  Maybe you are frustrated because you know you have the proper skills to play for most colleges but you just may not know how the recruiting process works?  Don’t worry if you fall into these categories; you are not alone!

One of the most frustrating parts of being a talented high school athlete is that you don’t know the first steps of getting recruited to a good college or how to “get your name out there”.  Another frustration you may share with others is that your High School coaches don’t have a clue either.  Some athletes think if they are good enough they will get noticed.  Well, that’s certainly not the case.

It’s time to roll up your sleeves, lace up your shoes and get to work.

Today I want to share with you a few pointers about writing a letter to a future potential baseball coach.  Yes, you will have to write the letter, not your parents. You can choose to write an email or typed hard copy and send it regular mail.

Before you write your letter make sure you do plenty of research about the school and the baseball program.  Learn the coaches names, including all of the assistance names as well.  Learn all about the history of the baseball program etc.

Here are a few good tips (Do’s and Dont’s) that will help you write a good letter:

Do address the letter to the coach using his or her name

Don’t start the letter saying “Dear coach” unless you want you letter to go directly in the trash.

Do type your letters

Don’t hand write a letter

Do make it personal and add your signature.

Don’t add any stats! Coaches care more about your ability than they do about stats.

Do state your point quickly and be brief (short and sweet!)

Don’t write long paragraphs, keep them short and too the point.

Do write your letter yourself

Don’t have your mommy or daddy do it for you
